In Memory - June (Gilmore) Pritchard 1942-1943 Kiltie

June Pritchard, age 86, passed away on January 13, 2012, at St. Johns hospital in Springfield. She was born on June 26, 1925 in Springfield and went on to graduate from Senior High School (now Central High School). June was Vice President of Springfield Office Supply for 33 years and retired in 1985.

She was a member of University Heights Baptist Church, a Past President of The Soroptomist Club and a volunteer at St. Johns hospital for many years. The joy's of her life were her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, playing Bridge with her dear friends and playing golf.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Warren Pritchard, her parents Dee and Ila Gilmore, a brother, Wm. Gilmore and a sister Mary Brewster. She is survived by her beloved daughter Charlotte Wilson, grandchildren Ashley Kubik and her husband Brian and Victor Wilson and his wife Deanne, 6 great-grandchildren Cross, Creighton and Crosby Kubik and Campbell, Brody and Drake Wilson and nephews Michael Gilmore and Chan Brewster and niece Janice Simmering.

Graveside services will be on Tuesday January 17, 2012 at 1:00 pm at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens with Rev. Hosea Bilyeu officiating, with a visitation being on Monday January 16, 2012 from 7:00 to 8:00 pm at Greenlawn Funeral Home South. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St. Judes Research Hospital.

Alumni Profile - Helen Haymes Spellman, 1929-1931 Scotch Lassie (Kiltie)

Bonnie Helen Haymes was born in her home on April 13, 1912. She was a Scotch Lassie (Kiltie—name changed in 1939) from 1929 to 1931 and she played the trumpet. During her years on the corps Mrs. Geister* was the sponsor and Ritchie Robertson (Founder) was the conductor. Helen was on the corps during the depression years, so they did not take a lot of trips. The largest trip they took was to north Arkansas and they stayed for 5 days. When she was a ‘Kiltie’ they had practice every morning before school and everyone got along with each other. If someone didn’t get along they were off the corps. The ‘Kilties’ was the only drum corps for girls west of the Mississippi. When someone knows what the Kilties are it makes her very happy. She also likes the reunion teas.

During her time the Kilties didn’t do a lot of service because of the hard times and the lack of charities. ‘Kilties’ did help the community by going places with the Boy Scout band (also founded by Robertson) and going to the dedication of new town halls. They didn’t have to do fund-raising because the business men of the community helped sponsor the corps. Helen's most memorable parade was when Harry S. Truman came to Springfield (at this time he was the Presiding Judge of Jackson County Court.) Back then Central was the only high school with a corps so they had no one to compete against.

When your tried out for the ‘Kilties’, you had to try out three times before you actually made the corps. About 300 girls tried out and only 36 would make it. The corps was made up of six trumpets, two bagpipes, two base drums and the rest were tenor and snare drums and of course the Majorette. Helen still remembers all the cadences and supports the Kilties by keeping them in her thoughts and attending reunion teas.

Helen was married at 23 to Leonard Spellmen. Her and her husband eloped to Sedalia. They had three children, two boys (David and Robert) and one girl (Ann). Helen never went to collage because there was no money but she did work in many different jobs from the five and dime to the field of photography. During the war year she and her family participated in the March of Dimes. She was recently nominated the Queen of Missouri health and she has visited Jefferson City as part of her duties. To this day she still helps the community and loves the Kilties. Bonnie Helen Haymes Spellman is going to be 100 years old on her next birthday and the Kilties will be there to help her celebrate. Helen is the oldest known Kiltie. As the saying goes, Once a Kiltie, Always a Kiltie..

Poetry Spotlight

The following poem was written in 1987 by then Senior Kiltie Tammy Ratliff and dedicated to the graduating Kilties.

With Kiltie Love
Time comes and goes, and time slips by we will march only one more time together as a corps, one more time of spreading joy.
We will remember the fun we’ve had, friends we’ve shared, and how much everyone really cared.
We have each touched the other’s life, in times of gladness and times of strife.
The past few years have been a blast, but now it all slips into the past.
The early morning practices with very little rest, and being backstage getting dressed.
Bus rides together, singing and cheering all the way, bringing home trophies by being the best in the parade.
Never once did we let Mrs. Lurvey down, we proved we are the best in town.
Being one of the “girls in plaid” has been the best experience we’ve ever had.
We wore the Royal Stewart with pride, and never once has our spirit died.
We now move on to the alumni side, and hope the rest have learned to guide.
Guide, file, pick up your feet and smile, all the words that show the Kiltie style.
We will no longer be here to yell those magical words, but even without us they will still be heard.
We will remember the special times of which we were a part, but most of all we will remember each other, with Kiltie Love, deep in our hearts.

Alumni Profile - Janet Nelson, 1980-1982 Kiltie

Janet Nelson was a Kiltie from 1980 to 1982. Her first year on the corps she played the base drum and the tenor drum her senior year. During her senior year the corps went to Washington D.C. and performed in the Cherry Blossom Parade. Regular performances included Veterans Day parade, Spring-field Christmas parade, Branson parade, games and nursing homes a few times to perform for elderly Kilties. Her mother was the president of the “mothers” club during her senior year.

During Ms. Nelson’s time there were between 30 to 35 girls on the corps. The girls got along as a whole, but did have smaller groupings. The community enjoyed the Kilties and recognized them with applause during parades. At the time all five high schools had corps of their own (Hillcrest Highlanders, Parkview Lassies, Kickapoo Bonnies, and Glendale Scotties). Practices were at 6:30 am on school days and 7:00 am to 11:00 am during the summers. The major benefit of being a Kilties was, of course, the exercise; but during Ms. Nelson’s time being a Kiltie was prestigious. In later years she has been given recognition and teased (friendly teasing) for having been a Kiltie.

Today Ms. Nelson is a Surgical Tech at Cox Hospital, were she has worked for the last 26 years. She is currently in a domestic partnership with her boyfriend of 20 years. She fishes, reads and visits the lake. Ms. Nelson supports the Kilites in many ways. She comes to Chili supers, garage sales, and teas. She buys t-shirts and donates money. She also receives e-mails of events and has been keeping up with the Kilties. Many supported her while she was a Kiltie, so she supports the Kilties now. We appreciate all she does.

October Fundraiser

The big fundraiser for October is the Kilties 1st (possibly annual) 5K Walk/Run on October 15th at Harrison Stadium. Below is the information for this event.

to benefit the

Saturday October 15, 2011
Registration begins at Noon

Race begins at 1:00 p.m.

Location: Harrison Stadium

ENTRY FEES: $25 per person (T-shirt included if registered by October 1st. T-shirts available on a first come, first served basis on day of race for those who register after October 1st or on race day.)

Mail entries to: Jessica Freeman, Central High School, 423 East Central, Springfield, MO 65802

You can also bring your entry and payment to the main office at Central High School. Please put it in an envelope addressed to Jessica Freeman, Kiltie Sponsor and the secretary will place it in her mailbox.

October Performance Schedule

If a time is not listed for a performance, it will be posted as soon as I find it out. All Central football games start at 7pm. It is a good idea to get to the stadium before 6:30 pm if you want to see the Kilties perform during pregame.

October 5th:
Homecoming Assemblies (there are two) - The first one starts at 8:15am in the CHS Auditorium and the second one will be right after the first, about an hour later.
(This is when the Majorette does the Sword Dance and the Corps performs Highland Fling)

October 6th:
CHS Homecoming Football Game vs. Willard - Pregame performance, usually around 6:30pm.

October 8th:
Mt. Vernon Apple Butter Makin' Days - The parade starts at 9am at the middle school football field (on 39 hwy) and will go through the square.

October 15th:
Kiltie 5K Walk/Run - 1-4pm at Central's Harrison Stadium. This is a fundraiser for the Kilties, more info will be posted as it becomes available.

October 21st:
CHS Football Game vs. Parkview - Pregame performance, usually around 6:30pm

October 29th:
MSU Homecoming Parade - Parade starts at 9am. The parade route will start at the corner of St. Louis and John Q. Hammons Parkway and will continue south on John Q. Hammons Parkway until Grand.

New Fundraiser for September

The Kilties have started a new fundraiser today selling items from Celebrating Home. The corps is doing this in order to generate funds for transportation. Kilties are not funded by the school district and must pay for transportation. It is $25 to get the bus out of the barn, $17.50 per hour for the driver, then .90 per mile, and $24 for each meal the driver eats with the corps.

Celebrating Home offers candles, and other various items.

If you would like to help the Kilties with this fundraiser by making a purchase, you can do so in person from a Kiltie or online. Below are the instructions for making a purchase online.

Stockton Black Walnut Festival Parade - 1 p.m. is the Parade Lineup at Stockton School with the parade starting at 2 p.m. Parade winners will be announced on stage at 4pm.

The girls started selling candles on August 22nd. Fundraising is the sole support of the Kilties.

I want to start out by thanking everyone for supporting the Central Kilties. I have had great pleasure getting to know and being a part of this wonderful corps for the past four years. One year supporting my daughter and three years as a sponsor. I have met some great people and made some very good friends during my time with the corps and for that I am blessed. Unfortunately, I will not be a sponsor next year for reasons beyond my control. I will still continue to support the girls and cheer them on at performances as they will forever have a special place in my heart.

April Events

The Kilties arrived back from Florida last week and they all had a blast. Now that fund-raising is over for the big trip - it's time for the corps to focus on end of the year activities, tryouts for next year and an Alumni Tea. Here are some calender dates for the month of April:

April 09, 2011 - Alumni Tea @ Central in the commons area (that is in the newer part of Central) from 1-3pm. There will be a performance in the pit followed by refreshments and catching up with old corps members in the commons area.

The Kilties will be selling t-shirts at the Alumni Tea celebrating the 85th Anniversary of the oldest all-female drum corps in the country. These shirts are really cool looking and are already in high demand. So I suggest pre-ordering them directly from Co-Sponsor, Laura Davis. You can email Laura at ldavis491@spsmail.org - Shirts are $15 for sizes S-2XL. 3XL's will have to be special ordered. Child sizes, also $15 starting at size 4 will be available by pre-order only and will not be sold at the alumni tea. The t-shirt design is shown below. February 01, 2011 - The Kilties will be performing during half-time of the CHS Boy's Basketball game against Republic. The game starts at 7pm and will be in the "Pit".

February 4, 2011 - The Kilties are having a Wendy's night from 5-8 pm at the Sunshine and National Wendy's location. They get 10% of the receipt sales from that time frame.

CANCELED DUE TO WEATHER/ROAD CONDITIONS: February 5, 2011 - The Kilties will be performing during half-time at Drury University for both the men and women's games. The ladies game is first, with a start time of 1pm. The men's game is second with a start time of 3:30pm. Both games are against Northern Kentucky in the O'Reilly Family Event Center at Drury University.

February 20, 2011 - The Parent's Club is having a poker tournament at Dennis' Place at noon. There is a $25 donation to participate. You can contact Richard Baldwin at rbaldwin64@mchsi.com or any Parent's Club member for more information. All donations go to the Kilties for their trip to Florida.

In Memory - Susanna Horton Robey

Susanna Horton Robey, 73, of Dubuque, Iowa, formerly of Springfield, Mo., passed away after a short illness on Thursday, Dec. 30, surrounded by her daughters.

Susanna was born on October 2, 1937, in Springfield, Mo., daughter of George Vaughan Horton and Dorothy Durst Horton, and beloved younger sister to Harry "Hank" Horton, who preceded her in death. She attended Greenwood School and Central High School, where she was in the Kilties Drum and Bugle Corps. She attended University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, graduated from Drury College, and was a member of the Delta Delta Delta sorority.

A lifelong educator, she began her career as an English teacher in Kansas City. Susanna married George E. Robey on June 18, 1960. Their first child, Susan, was born in Springfield while George was stationed in Korea. Upon his return, they moved to Dubuque, Iowa, where they had two more children, Margaret and Cynthia.

Susanna supported her adopted community through numerous volunteer activities including serving for 18 years on the Dubuque School Board, and received the Governor's Volunteer Award. She was a familiar face at Sibbing's Jewelry, which she owned with George. She took great pride in being a Dubuque resident, yet was always proud of her Springfield heritage, and spent many Fourth of July vacations visiting family here. She was admired for her indomitable spirit, strong devotion to family, and love of helping others. Her ability to make every stranger an instant friend touched the lives of countless people.

Susanna is survived by daughters Susan (Jeff Bond) Robey-Bond of Vermont, Margi (Bill) Donaldson of Arizona, Cynthia (Dan Duncomb) Robey-Duncomb and step-daughter Beth (Dan) Wilson of Wisconsin, and grandchildren Ben and Hannah Bond, Adam and Emily Donaldson, and Jared and Emily Wilson. She was preceded in death by her husband on Nov. 11, 2010.

Online condolences may be left to the family at www.egelhofsiegertcasper.com. A celebration of her life will be held in Springfield this summer; details will be announced at a later date.

UPDATE: A celebration of the life of former Kiltie Susanna Horton Robey will be held July 9, 2011 at 11 am at the First & Calvary Presbyterian Church, 820 E. Cherry, Springfield, MO. A luncheon will follow in the church Fellowship Hall.

As you may or may not already know, the Kilties have been invited to perform at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida this Spring. With any trip, comes the daunting task of raising the money required to go. For those of you who were Kilties, Sponsors or Parents at one time or another, you know how this works....FUNDRAISING!

The Kiltie Parent's Club is selling Kiltie shirts for $10 each and the Kilties are selling CHS shirts for $10 each. If you are interested in buying a shirt from the Parent's Club, you can contact Kiltie Dad, Richard Baldwin. If you want to buy a CHS shirt (design pictured above) you can contact Kiltie Co-Sponsor, Laura Davis.

The Kilties will also be scheduling a chili supper/silent auction soon and would like to get some donations for the auction. If you own a business and would like to donate services and/or items to be auctioned off, please contact Laura Davis. The time and date of this event will be posted as soon as it is scheduled.

Going on any trip, big or small, can cost quite a bit for a corps of 20+ girls, their sponsors and other chaperones. If you are able to help in any way, the girls would appreciate it. Yesterday, the Kilties had their first performance as a full corps. The Annual Park Day Parade has included the Kilties for years, and this year was no exception. In Memory - Jean Mariea Pike 1972-1974 Kiltie

Jean Mariea Pike was born in Springfield, Missouri, to David "Dempsey" Pike, Sr., and Glyndolyn Lucille Eldridge Pike on August 9, 1956. Jean was the first daughter and the fourth child born of seven children. Jean accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at a young age in Pitts Chapel UMC. Jean was the Assistant Majorette of the Springfield Kiltie's Drum and Bugle Corp. her senior year. Jean graduated from Central High School in 1974. Attended MSU for a short time before going to work for Reyco Industries. Jean then worked for Frisco Railroad, Burlington Northern-Sante Fe Railroad until her disability in 2000. Jean lived her whole life in Springfield except for the five years she lived in Topeka, Kan., while employed with the railroad. Jean volunteered for the Obama Campaign and saw her success when he was elected as our first Black President of the United States. Jean was also an active member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post 639 for 15 years. Jean went home to be with our Lord on Friday, June 4, 2010, at 2:20 a.m. after a long illness. Jean was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Dwayne. She leaves five siblings to cherish her memory, Clark, David (Bernice), Jane, James and JoNell (Robert) Williams, all of Springfield; two special cousins, Duke Winkfield and Cynthia Duncan; nieces, nephews, and a host of loving relatives and friends. Jean was a caring and loving sister, aunt, and friend who loved life to the fullest regardless of her disability. Jean will be greatly missed by all who loved her. You may contribute to Jean's favorite charities The Lupus Foundation and The Cancer Society. Visitation is Thursday, June 10, 2010, at 7 p.m. Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home. Home going celebration, 11 a.m. Friday, June 11, 2010, in Pitts Chapel UMC, 600 N. Benton Ave., Springfield, MO 65806. Burial will follow in Eastlawn Cemetery.

In Memory - Linda (Cantrell) Evans, 1957-1959 Kiltie

Linda Evans went to heaven on May 31, 2010, at 6:45 a.m. She died at her home in Springfield, Missouri at the age of 68. Linda was born on November 4, 1941 at Burge Hospital in Springfield. She graduated from Central High School, May 1959. Linda was a Kiltie for two years, and served as the Majorette for one year. She married Gary G. Evans in August of 1959. Together they began building homes and started a cabinet business, CASCO Kitchen Center in 1971. Linda, Gary, and their children attended High Street Baptist Church from birth to 2009. She was a member of Graceway Baptist Church at the time of her death. She volunteered in many ministries such as teaching Sunday school, cooking and decorating for events, and serving on committees for planning special church anniversaries. Linda enjoyed hobbies of antique collecting, studying history, time at the lake with family, and home decorating. She was preceded in death by her nephew, Clinton Cantrell, and her father-in-law, George W. Evans. She is survived by her husband, Gary Evans; daughter, Susan Evans Connolly, and husband, Stan; son, Kirk Evans, and wife, Cindy; son, Scott Evans, and wife, Penny; eight grandchildren, Jarrod, Kyle, Hannah, Natalie, Austin, Connor, Lexi, and her little Jenna. She is also survived by her parents, Ken and Gay Cantrell; mother-in-law, Mildred Evans; brother, Randy Cantrell, and wife, Linda; niece, Lori K. Hackworth; nephew, Ryan Cantrell; several cousins and great nieces and nephews. She was greatly loved by all her family and will be extremely missed. The visitation will be held Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Greenlawn East, 3540 E. Seminole, and the funeral will be Thursday at 1 p.m. in Graceway Baptist Church, 5010 S. Farm Road 135, (corner of Golden and Weaver Road), Springfield, Missouri. Interment will be at White Chapel Memorial Gardens, 5234 W. State Highway EE.

The following two performances will be on June 5, 2010:

Ride for Life - This is a send-off performance, which will take place at 10:30 am at the Roadhouse of S. Campbell.

Relay for Life - The Kilties will perform at 2 pm and then walk the route with the participants walking behind them. This event will be in Carthage.

The Kilties also have 3 reunion performances scheduled for the month of June, but those are not open to the public. All five performances will not include new girls. The first performance for the entire corps will be the Park Day parade, which is always the first Saturday in August.

Helen Louise Bowman was born April 2, 1928, in Springfield, Mo. She passed away May 14, 2010, after an extended illness. Helen graduated from Senior High School in 1946 where she was a member of the Kiltie Drum Corps. She was a member of Campbell Avenue United Methodist Church for over 50 years. Helen was a homemaker and enjoyed cooking and entertaining her family, friends and neighbors. Helen was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Harold "Buddy" Jarvis and Cecil "Wicky" Jarvis; sister, Jackie Jarvis of Sedalia. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Jack Ringle Bowman, of the home; son, Jack R. Jr., and wife Janice of Aurora; daughter, Alicia Bowman, Adams Buckmaster of Springfield; six grandchildren, Jack R. III and wife Amy, Austyn, Andrew, Alexander, Adam, Alijah; two great-grandchildren, Nathan and Breanna; brother-in-law, Richard Bowman of Nixa; two sisters-in-law, Lorraine Bowman and Joyce Jarvis of Springfield; many cousins, nieces, nephews and a host of friends. Helen was truly a good woman and she will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Graveside service will be held in the Missouri Veterans Cemetery at a later date under the direction of Klingner-Cope Family Funeral Home at Rivermonte. Family and friends will celebrate her life at a later date to be announced.

It's that time of year again - Kiltie tryouts! The dates for clinics and tryouts are below.

April 26th - April 30th: Kiltie clinics for current Kilties and incoming hopefuls (incoming freshman and up) from 6:15-7:15 am.

April 29th - April 30th: Tryouts for the 2010-2011 school year from 6:15-7:15am

May 3rd - May 4th: Instrument tryouts will be from 6:15-7:15 am.

May 5th and 6th: Captain tryouts will be from 6:15-7:15 am and

May 6th: Majorette tryouts at 3:30pm

In Memory - Jacqueline Holt Powell

Jacqueline Holt Powell was born October 18, 1922 in Aurora, Mo. to Dr. Charles B. and Sara Holt. She passed away March 26, 2010 in her home surrounded by family.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Dr. E.M. Powell, her four children, Dr. J. Robin Powell, New York City; Sara Powell, New York City; Walter and Stephany Powell, Springfield; Carey and Michal Powell, Florida; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; and her sister Bettye Holt Vogel.

The Holt family moved to Springfield in 1927. Jackie attended McDaniel Elementary, Jarrett Middle School and Springfield High School where she was a member of the Kilties and played the bagpipes. She attended Drury College for one year and became a member of Phi Beta Phi sorority. She graduated from Springfield Teachers College with a degree in Home Economics. She taught school for one year in Sarcoxie and two years in Memphis, Tenn.

She married PFC Mac Powell in 1944. They returned to Springfield with their family and she was able to pursue her many interests. A very accomplished musician, Jackie was concert mistress of the 1940 orchestra receiving a national award with a one rating. She played violin with the Springfield Symphony from 1944-1994. Jackie was an avid golfer and tennis player, and was a member of Twin Oaks Country Club. She played on 8 Horton Smith Cup Teams and was club champion in 1965. She was a member of Christ Episcopal Church.

Visitation will be held on Monday, March 29th from 5 to 7 p.m. at Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home, with a graveside service to be held Tuesday, March 30th at 11 a.m. at Maple Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Springfield Symphony, 411 N. Sherman Parkway, Springfield, Mo. 65802

Former Kiltie, Sponsor needs your help

Former Kiltie (as well as former Kiltie Sponsor) Sunday (Jones) Wildschuetz and her husband Gary are trying to bring home their daughter Journey from Russia and need your help.

Sunday and Gary have only 4 more weeks to raise the remaining $10,000.00 and there are two fundraisers happening to help raise that amount. The first is this Thursday, February 4th. Grant Avenue Baptist Church is having a Spaghetti Dinner from 5 to 8pm to help raise money to bring Journey home. We hope you all come out and enjoy the spaghetti. It is by donation only and please bring friends. LOTS OF FRIENDS! :-)

There will also be silent auction items to bid on. Grant Avenue is just south of the the Grand and Grant intersection.

The second fundraiser is a 5K walk on Valentine's day (Sunday, February 14th), and hearts are being sold for $5 a piece. If you have any questions about the Valentine's Day walk and $5 hearts, you can call current Kiltie co-sponsor Jessica Freeman at 417-860-5195.

Please help Sunday and Gary bring home their beautiful daughter Journey - they will forever be thankful!

Haley Stevens Scholarship

As many of you know Haley Stevens was a former Kiltie who recently passed away from ALS, also known as Lou Gherig's Disease. Haley's mom, Gretchen Teague sent out an email in regards to the Haley Stevens Scholarship & some upcoming fundraising that's taking place for it. Haley was very proud to march with the Kilties and the scholarship is for those who participated in two of the four activities: kilties, choir, dance & theatre.

There will be a Musical Festival on January 23rd, 2010 in the Central High School commons from 12-6pm with bands performing throughout the day. Donations will be accepted and checks should be made payable to the Foundation for Springfield Public Schools, with a note saying the money is for the Haley Stevens Scholarship.

This scholarship is a great way to honor Haley & her time spent on the corps, as well as to help out future girls who share the same love & admiration for the Kilties.

2010 will mark the 84th year that the Kilties have been marching and as we all know it takes quite a bit of effort and money to keep the corps (and other groups like it ) up & running. The Kilties only recieve funding from the school district every 5 years in order to purchase uniforms & instruments, as well as to pay for buses and anything else the girls need. The rest is up to the girls & their parents to host fundriasers throughout the year in order to pay for the things they need, but there's a way you can help out. Kiltie Dad Richard Baldwin is proposing that we as both CHS & Kiltie alumni, as well as Kiltie fans in general help put together a Kiltie Christmas this year by donating to the corps any way we can.

Here are the current needs of the corps:

-3 medium size kilts $485 a piece
-1 bagpipe $1,500
-4 bagpipe cases $150 a piece
-1 trumpet $650
-4 trumpet cases $80 a piece
-2 flag poles $65 a piece
-5 pairs of tenor sticks $35 a piece

Checks should be made out to "Central High School Kilties" and you can contact Richard Baldwin with any questions, as this is just what I have been able to transfer over from Facebook.

I would also like to thank the Scottish St. Andrews Society of Springfield for extending an invitation to all current & former Kilties to attend this year's Kirkin' of the Tartans. Myself & my Kiltie little sister attended and it was a lovely ceremony & we got the opportunity to talk with members of the society and Kiltie alumni Lucinda Goetz and her husband Jay.

This Friday is Central's last home football game and the Kilties will be doing a pre-game performance. Also at Friday's game, the Kiltie Parent's Club will be drawing the name of the person who will a brand new Whirlpool washer & dryer donated by Metro Builders Supply!
The Parents Club is selling chances for $2 each (or 3 for $5). You do not need to be present to win. You can contact any Kiltie or Parent's Club member for tickets.

Saturday is another Parent's Club fundraiser. They will be having a yard sale at the corner of Grant & Atlantic (Woodland Heights Presbyterian Church). They will also be at the church on Thursday night from 7 - 9 pm for people to drop off donations for the sale.

The parade schedule will start back up on Halloween with MSU's annual Homecoming Parade. The parade starts at 9am. The parade route will start at the corner of St. Louis and John Q. Hammons Parkway and will continue south on John Q. Hammons Parkway until Grand. The route will NOT turn on Cherry Street like last year due to the construction of JQH Arena.

On October 3, 2009, the Kilties did a performance at the Step Out: Walk to Fight Diabetes. The girls were suppose to march in the Versailles Apple Festival Parade, but chose to support a fellow Kiltie who has diabetes. Below are some scenes from that event.

CANCELED PERFORMANCE: Versailles Apple Festival and Parade

Last Saturday was the Stockton Black Walnut Festival and Parade. The Kilties won 1st Place and Best Drum Majorette. This Saturday is the Versailles Apple Festival and Parade. Originally the Kilties were going to march in the parade but due to other obligations, they will NOT be in the Versailles parade.

Due to several girls not being able to participate in Saturday’s parade and feeling the need to support a current Kiltie we are cancelling the trip to Versailles. The Kilties want to show their support for one of our girls who is a diabetic. We will be performing at the Diabetes Walk this Saturday. UPCOMING PERFORMANCES - CHS Homecoming Game and Stockton Black Walnut Festival

This is going to be a busy week for the girls as the football and parade season is going on right now. Good luck to all of the Kilties!

Thursday morning is the Homecoming Assembly. If you would like to attend so you can see the Kilties perform, please check with the Principal's office for the official time and visitor's policy.

Friday night at 7pm is the CHS Homecoming Game. Kilties perform during pre-game so plan on being there at 6pm for a good seat if you wish to see the girls march. Pre-game will most likely be around 6:30pm.

Saturday is the Stockton Black Walnut Festival Parade. Line-up begins at 1:00pm with the parade starting at 2pm. Hillcrest will also be at this parade and the parade winners will be announced at 4pm.

UPCOMING PERFORMANCES - ALS Walk to Defeat and Gainesville Hootin an Hollarin Festival

This Saturday, September 19th, the Kilties have two performances. First you can find them at the ALS Walk to Defeat in Springfield. The schedule for the walk is as follows:

The second performance is the Annual Gainesville Hootin an Hollarin Parade. The parade starts at 2pm on the Gainesville, MO Court House Square.

CANCELED PERFORMANCE - Southwest Missouri Celtic Heritage Festival & Highland Games

The Kilties were going to be performing at the Scottish Festival in Buffalo this Saturday the 12th. However, the Kilties will instead be attending the memorial service for Kiltie, Haley Stevens who died last week after her couragious battle with ALS.

Please read the following which was sent in an email from Kiltie Dad, Richard Baldwin.

Thursday night we lost a dear friend to ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). Haley Stevens was only 17 years old. Just 2 short years ago, Haley was marching with the Central High School Kilties, Dancing on Dance Team, and performing plays in drama.

On September 19th, many of her family and friends are participating in the Walk to Defeat ALS. It is too late for a cure for Haley, but there are still countless others battling this terrible disease. We need a cure for THEM! If you have already donated to one of the many walkers: Thank You! If you are walking and helping to raise money and awareness about ALS: Thank You!

In Memory - Haley Elise Stevens

Haley was a true inspiration to those who knew her as she worked to educate all of us on the same terrible disease that took her life. The Springfield Walk to Defeat ALS is September 19th, let's honor Haley's memory and participate in this years walk*

Haley Elise Stevens

Haley Elise Stevens, 17, lost her courageous two-year battle with ALS, or Lou Gehrig's Disease, on September 3, 2009. Haley was born on January 3, 1992, in Springfield. She was an active member of the Springfield theatre scene and an inexhaustible member of the Central High School student body. She performed in her first play in second grade, was a part of productions at Vandivort and Springfield Little Theatre, and had been a member of almost every Central theatre performance for the last eight years. Haley loved choir, dance, comedy and was a proud member of the Central Kilties. Haley was also an active member at Hope Community Church. Haley is survived by a mother and step-father, Gretchen and Shawn Teague, Springfield; father and step-mother, Matt and LaDonna Stevens, Springfield; a brother, Zachary Teague; three step-sisters, Ashley, Ericka and Erin; many loving grandparents; a large extended family; and hundreds of admiring friends. A celebration of Haley's life will be held on Saturday, September 12, in Hope Community Church, 2121 S. Blackman Rd., at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Keith Worthington Chapter of the ALS Association in Springfield, 1721 W. Elfindale St., Ste. 101, Springfield, MO, 65807 or 417-886-5003. Haley's bright life and brave struggle are an inspiration to everyone who knew her. She is loved and missed, and will always be cherished as a beautiful daughter, sister and friend.

I'm very sad to report that Haley Stevens passed away a few hours ago. Haley was a beautiful and inspiring young woman who will be missed by all who knew her. I encourage everyone to keep her family and friends in their thoughts and prayers as they face this difficult time ahead. I also encourage everyone to take part in the ALS walk anyway they can if they haven't already. It's as important now as ever that we help find a cure for ALS.

Alumni Profile - Lucinda (Arnold) Goetz, 1972-1974 Kiltie

Do you remember the first time you ever saw the Kilties? Lucinda (Arnold) Goetz was 6 years old when she first saw the Kilties perform in the Springfield Christmas Parade in 1962. As with all of us, the sounds of each instrument gripped Lucinda. Who could forget the feel of their heart pounding with the sound of the drums, the wail of the bagpipes and the sound of the bugles. It's impossible not to hear the beating of the drums from blocks away as the Kilties make their way towards you.

That's how it was for Lucinda that day. As she sat on top of her father's shoulders and saw for the first time the Central High School Kiltie Drum & Bugle Corps. It was then that she decided her first goal and ambition in life. Lucinda knew that she would not only be a Kiltie, but she would play bagpipe as well.

Ten years later, Lucinda attended Kiltie tryouts for the 1972-1973 school year. Much to her delight, Lucinda was not only accepted into the new Kiltie Corps, she was also selected to play the bagpipes. From that point on it was practice, practice, practice! The next year, Lucinda was chosen to be Bagpipe Captain for the 1973-1974 Kiltie Drum Corps. It was at this point that Lucinda's first ambition, her first dream in life became complete.

After graduating from Central in 1974, Lucinda went on to college at Southwest Missouri State (now MSU). Like most after graduation, the call of the pipes grew faint and Kilties began to become just a memory. In 1985, Lucinda met Jay Goetz and the two began dating. Jay lived in St. Louis and when he first visited her parent's home he saw Lucinda's Kiltie picture.

"I was floored by the impression it had upon me. I wanted to hear all about it as I had never met anyone who could play the bagpipes." Jay recalled.

Two years later Lucinda married Jay and somewhere deep inside, the newlyweds knew the pipes would call to her again. Little did they know just how long it would take before Lucinda would play the bagpipes again.

In 2005, Jay and Lucinda were in St. Charles, Missouri when they happened upon the Missouri Tartan Day Festivities. While there, the couple cornered a bagpiper and in Jay's own words "exhaustively grilled him as to how and where Lucinda could return to piping."

Soon after, Lucinda began receiving formal training from an oboeist who played with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, who was also a piper in the John Ford Highland Pipe Band of Greater St. Louis. After a few weeks of attending practices, Lucinda began teaching Jay what she had learned. Due to his work schedule, Jay was unable to attend practices with Lucinda. Within two years, Jay and Lucinda drove to Witchita, Kansas to pickup their MacLeod Great Highland Bagpipes which were made in Glasgow, Scotland. The pipes were purchased through Jim Lindsay, a Scottish born Master Piper. At 83 years old, Mr. Lindsay's only words of advice to aspiring pipers (spoken with a thick Scottish accent) was "Practise, Practise, Practise."

Lucinda and Jay have continued the Kiltie spirit through their bagpiping in which they have performed at numerous parades, weddings, funerals, churches, golf tournaments, military events and many other gatherings. They have also been requested to perform at a full miltary internment at Arlington National Cemetary.

Since Lucinda and Jay currently live in St. Louis, they often refer those interesting in learning how to play the bagpipes to local St. Louis pipe bands that offer training. Jay and Lucinda are however, available to provide information and advice about learning to play the bagpipes.

For anyone interested in bagpipe lessons, Jay offers up this piece of advice,

"Anyone seriously considering taking up the pipes should talk to an experienced piper. There are many things to consider and be advised about before starting. It is rewarding but it is very very challenging."

As any current (or previous) Kiltie bagpiper will tell you, it's not as easy as it looks.

Interesting Facts about the Kiltie Bagpipes

The Kiltie Drum and Bugle Corps have had bagpipes from almost their very beginning. The Springfield Kiwanis Club bought the first bagpipes for the corps and only two girls were selected to play the 'pipes. These bagpipes were much smaller than the ones we currently use, however our bagpipes are even smaller than the standard size, which is used in Scottish regiments.

Later the Springfield School System bought eight new bagpipes for the Kilties and decided that Central would be the only school to have bagpipes. However, the Glendale Scotties Mother`s Club, raised enough money to buy their corps eight bagpipes.

When the pipes are carried straight up, this symbolizes respect and also looks good, really work hard to keep your pipes as straight as possible.

Old Bagpipe is the National Anthem of Scotland, and is also known as Bonnie Lassie or Scotland the Brave. Our Kiltie Song is set to the music of Old Bagpipe. New Bagpipe and Twirler`s Song were written in 1969. The Highland Fling and Shilaliegh are war dances of Scottish Clans. There are two major distinctions in Scottish 'pipe music. "Big music" is a song of grief. Slow March is a type of "big music." "Little music" includes marches and reels. The Highland Fling and the other bagpipe songs, which we perform, are types of "little music."

In 1976, the Kilties were 50 years old. That corps took a trip to Concord, Massachusetts, and performed in a parade. The Bagpipe Captain at that time, Sara Mason, wrote two songs for the trip. One was named Concord and was dedicated to the city where they marched. The other song was named Selkirk for a Scottish pirate who spent 52 months alone on an island. This was the inspiration for the story of Robinson Crusoe.

We use a commercial preparation to grease our bagpipes, but many Scotsmen use molasses or honey to grease their bags. The bag may be made out of many types of animal skins such as Black Elk or Sheepskin.

A bagpipe, if cared for correctly, will last a lifetime. The chanter currently costs over $100.00 and an entire bagpipe will cost over $1000.00

Be proud to be a Kiltie and a bagpiper. Strive to be the best. Carry the pipes high and pick up your feet and always express the Kiltie personality with a smile. Take care of your bagpipe because you are playing with a very unique instrument.

UPCOMING PERFORMANCE - Southwest Missouri Celtic Heritage Festival & Highland Games

For the past several years, the Kilties have performed at the Southwest Missouri Celtic Heritage Festival & Highland Games in Buffalo, Missouri. In the picture on the side, the 2007-2008 Kilties are shown with their "People's Choice" trophy.

Of course the Kilties fit right in at this festival with it's scottish games, scottish food, scottish bagpipes and of course all that plaid!

You can see the Kilties perform at this year's festival on Saturday, September 12th, 2009 at noon. Be sure to bring an umbrella in case it rains and a chair to sit on, and don't forget to wear comfortable shoes.

Marcia "Maxine" (Moore) Martin Allen
Marcia "Maxine" (Moore) (Martin) Allen passed away August 21, in Springfield. She was born in Springfield on May 13, 1926, to Harvey and Flona Moore, who preceded her in death. Maxine is survived by her husband, Walter Allen of Springfield; along with three step-children, Jack Allen of Tulsa, Okla., John Allen and wife, Kathy of Houston, Texas, and Buenta Johnston and husband, Jim of Keller, Texas; aunt Callie Bay of Springfield, Mo.; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews. She attended local schools and graduated from Central High School, where she was a member of the Klities Drum Corps. Maxine went on to graduate from Springfield Teacher's College (MSU) prior to teaching art at Pipkin School for 30 years between 1948 and 1978. Maxine was a loving, generous and vibrant person who will be greatly missed by family and friends. Donations may be made on behalf of Maxine to the Alzheimer's Association, 1500 S. Glenstone, Springfield, MO 65804. Graveside services will be held Monday, at 2 p.m., in White Chapel Memorial Gardens, under the direction of Klingner-Cope Family Funeral Home at White Chapel, 5234 W. State Highway EE (Division).

The Kilties will be marching at the Walk to DeFeat ALS on September 19th. This year it will be held at Jordon Valley Park at 10:30am.

During the 2007-2008 School year, Haley Stevens began the year as a Kiltie. She was also on the Central Dance Team and very active in drama. During the year, at age 15, Haley began having trouble. It took a while to determine, but was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). This disease advanced so rapidly, that in less than a year, Haley had to have breathing and feeding tubes inserted in her throat. She is now almost completely paralyzed, only having movement of her eyes.

We need a cure! Haley needs a cure!

Both current Kilties and former Kilties have teams walking on the 19th. Anyone can register to walk and raise money for ALS. For Kilties to register, click here to Register, then "Join a Team", then type in "Kiltie" and hit enter. Both Kiltie teams will be listed. Click on the one you wish to Join, then click "Join Team" which is listed right after the team name. You can walk "virtually", just collect money to support ALS. Klova Jane Swan
Klova Jane Swan was born February 7, 1948, to David Macallister Swan and Betty Jane Swan. She was saved early in her life, and was baptized by her grandfather, the Reverend James R. Swan. She passed away August 18, 2009. Klova attended Westport Elementary School, Study Junior High and Central High School, graduating in 1966. In high school, she was an officer of the Kilties Drum Corps, vice president of Future Teachers of America club, a member of the Quill and Scroll club and was on the staff of the RESUME and the High Times. She received a Certificate of Recognition from the University of Missouri for High Scholastic Promise. She went to Southwest Missouri State College (now MSU) and was a member of the Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education degree in 1970. She began her teaching career in Niangua and then went to the Willard School System. She continued her education at Drury and received her Master in Education in 1974. Springfield Schools then hired her to teach developmentally disabled students at Jarrett Junior High. She was much admired by her students and fellow teachers. Her specialty was remedial reading, and she was passionate about instilling the love of reading in her students. After Jarrett, she moved to Pleasant View, Westport and Wanda Gray, followed by retirement in 1996. She married William E. Davis in August of 1969. To this union two sons were born, William B. Davis and Brandon T. Davis. She married James R. Campbell in January of 1983. To this union, one daughter was born, Sarah W.J. (Campbell) Stanfield. She was a terrific Mom to her children, and to James A. Campbell, her step-son as well. Two dear cousins will also miss Klova, Doug Corbin and Joy Beachler and husband, Leon. Klova's sister-in-law, Treesa (Campbell) Gannon, was also dear to her, and spent much time with her in her final year. Klova is survived by her husband, Jim Campbell; her loving children, Brent Davis and his wife, Jennifer, Tyce Davis and his wife, Sara, Sarah Stanfield and her husband, Brian; and step-son Jamie Campbell. She leaves life having known the love of her grandchildren, four granddaughters and one grandson; and a step-grandson and a step-granddaughter; and a step-grandson predeceasing her. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., in Greenlawn Funeral Home North, on Friday, August 21, and graveside services and interment will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, August 22, in Brookline Cemetery, Reverend Kenneth Fent officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be provided for a memorial scholarship for Special Education Students to be established at Drury University. Send donations to Prof. William B. Patsy Sue Long
Patsy Sue Long was born June 23, 1927, and passed away on Sunday, August 16, 2009. She was the daughter of Fern Lenore (Pickering) and Henry Berten Stevens. Patsy was born in Ottumwa, Iowa, and moved to Springfield, Mo. as a child. She was a proud graduate of the Senior High School class of 1945, where she was a member of the Kilties. Patsy then attended Southwest Missouri State, where she was active in her Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority. She met Bill in 1947 at SMS, graduated in 1950, and they married in December of that year. They have two children, Billy of Springfield, and Caryn of Idaho. She was preceded in death by her best friend, Kacy, earlier this year. She is survived by her devoted husband of 59 years, Bill; her favorite son, Billy; her favorite daughter, Caryn; her precious grandchildren, Kaleen, Kelle and Caleb; and her beloved twin sister, Peggy Lou; as well as the rest of the Long and Pickering clan who she loved so much. Patsy spent her 82nd birthday lovingly surrounded by the Fredrick 3-ring circus. She was a wonderful wife, loving mother, doting grandmother, grand aunt and cherished friend. Her love and generosity knew no bounds. Patsy's memory lives on in all the lives she touched and hands she held. A graveside service was held Tuesday, August 18, in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, with the Reverend Philip Snider presiding. Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Southwest Missouri Humane Society, 3161 W. Norton Rd., Springfield, MO 65803, or the March of Dimes, 2200 E. Sunshine, Springfield, MO 65804.

Carolyn Sue "Susie" (Burns) Forsythe
Carolyn Sue "Susie” Forsythe, age 77, of Springfield, passed away at 1:10 p.m. Friday, June 5, 2009, in St. John's Regional Health Center. Susie was born in Springfield on October 22, 1931, to Robert and Lottie Burns. She was a graduate of Springfield Senior High Class of 1949, and attended MSU where she was a member of Sigma Sigma Simga Sorority. She married Ray L. Forsythe on July 1, 1951, in Springfield. Susie and Ray returned to Springfield from Cabool, Mo., in 1957, and cofounded Town and County Men's and Women's Clothing. They later opened several stores in Little Rock, Ark., and Memphis, Tenn., and held an interest in several other stores in Tulsa, Okla., Joplin, Mo., and Springfield. Susie was an avid pianist, formally teaching piano lessons and was blessed with the gift of playing by ear. Ray and Susie were instrumental in establishing the Forsythe Athletic Center at MSU which was dedicated in 1985, and also established the Ray and Susie Forsythe Scholarship Fund for Cabool, Mo. students awarded to a member of each class at MSU. She was a member of SMMA and served on the Board of the Art Museum, a sustaining member of Springfield Junior League, Hickory Hills Country Club and a lifelong member of First & Calvary Presbyterian Church. She also was a member of several bridge clubs and two investment clubs. A very good friend of Susie, best described her as follows, "If life were a beauty pageant, Susie would be named Miss Congeniality." Susie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ray, who died on June 25, 2001; and her sister-in-law, Wilma Forsythe. She is survived by her son, Ray Bob Forsythe and his wife, Donna of Memphis, Tenn.; daughter Pam Forsythe Bryce of Springfield, Mo.; grandson Raymond Connor Forsyth; brother-in-law Max Forsythe; and nephew Steve Forsythe, both of Cabool, Mo.; and nephew Robert Forsythe and wife, Cindy of Little Rock, Ark., and their daughters, Tiffany and Stephanie. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 9, 2009, in Gorman-Scharpf Brentwood Chapel, with the Reverend Mary Ann Morris officiating. Burial will be in Cabool Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 5:30 p.m. today, in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Southwest Missouri Humane Society, 3161 W Norton Rd, Springfield, MO 65803.

The total amount made from today's Pancake Breakfast fundraiser won't be known for a few days. However, at first look the Kilties made over $1200 just from ticket sales alone. That does not include what the corps made from sales at the door and tips.

Well it's close to the end of the year for the senior Kilties and soon the new corps will be starting practice. Usually the new corps won't have their first performance until Park Day. The annual Park Day Reunion is usually always the first weekend in August, with the parade taking place that Saturday.

So as we start the beginnings of summer, good luck to the graduating Kilties in whatever their future may hold and good luck to the new corps.

To the new girls, a few words of advice that you'll hear all summer:

Scotch Lassies - Helen Haymes Spellman

If you attended the April 2007 Alumni Tea hosted by the 2006-2007 Kilties, then I'm sure you remember the lady in the picture. Her name is Helen Spellman and she was a member of the 1929-1931 Scotch Lassies Corps. The run under the direction of R. Ritchie Robertson Scotch Lassies. Helen celebrated her 95th birthday that month and is considered the oldest known Scotch Lassie.

I was looking up friends on facebook the other night when I came across a woman who's main profile picture was of her and Helen. It was Helen's daughter Ann. I wanted to make sure it really was Helen, so I sent Ann a message. She replied back and let me know how Helen is doing. Here is part of her response.

"She just turned 97 on April 13 and is in fairly good health. Just recently I received a couple of pictures from the last Kiltie reunion she attended; she felt so special that day as everyone treated her like a queen. "

As I have said before in a previous post, it is important to remember those who marched before us. Helen was a "Kiltie" when the corps was still a relatively new concept to Springfield. There were only about 4 corps before her. She knew Dr. Robertson and could probably tell you a whole lot about him. How many of us can say that we knew R. Ritchie Robertson?

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to attend the reunion that Helen was at. I haven't had the opportunity to meet her, but I am guessing she is quite a delight to visit with. If you attended the reunion and had the opportunity to speak with her, please leave a comment. And if you just want to send a message to Helen, leave a comment and I will let her daughter know.

Save the Date - ALS Walk to Defeat

The Kilties participated last year in the 2008 Walk to Defeat ALS in honor of Haley Stevens. Their team, Kilties for a Kure raised funds for the ALS Association. That money goes towards funding for local ALS research.

I am sure the Kilties will again participate in the ALS Associations annual fundraiser, but even if they don't you still can. Save the date - Saturday, September 19, 2009 @ Jordan Valley Park.

Even if you can't walk at the event, you can still donate in memory of someone who has already passed on due to ALS or in honor of someone you know who currently suffers from ALS. Or you can donate so that someday, no one will know anyone who suffers from ALS.

In Memory - LaVerta K. (Brown) Skidmore

LaVerta K. Skidmore, better known as "Kay”, passed away Friday, April 17, 2009, in her home, after fighting a long illness at the age of 69.

Born June 4, 1939, in Seiling, Oklahoma, she was the first child of the late Cecil and LaRayne Brown. After moving to Springfield, Kay attended Central High School where she was a member of the Kilties and swim team.

After graduation from high school, Kay met and married G. Paul Skidmore, the love of her life, and they settled in to raise their two children, Rick and Brenda. She and her husband enjoyed life to the fullest during their nearly 46 years of marriage.

A long time resident of Springfield, Kay had many friends and belonged to numerous organizations and clubs through the years. She was a lifetime member of Elks Lodge Ladies Auxiliary. In addition to being a loving wife and nurturing mother, Kay enjoyed bowling, swimming, water ballet, traveling, fishing and gambling. Kay and Paul spent most of their time in Rice Camp at Table Rock Lake.

Kay always had a bright smile to light up any room and a funny joke to bring a smile to even the saddest face and a helping hand to anyone in need. She will be deeply missed by everyone who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her grandmother, "Granny” Catherine; and her granddaughter, Ashley Nicole Skidmore.

Kay is survived by her husband, Paul; her grandfather, Edmund "Bud” Gott of Branson; her son, Rick Skidmore and his daughters, Courtney, Lindsey, Skylar and Lilyanne; her daughter and her husband, Brenda and Tito Rivera and their children, Brandy, Bronson, Tiffany and Matt; a great-granddaughter, Chloe Marie; brother Jerry Brown and wife, Sharon; and two nieces, KerriLynn Tally and Cassie Turner and their children. Kay also leaves behind very dear, life long friends, Ron and Sara Henderson and Bob Cruse.

A celebration of life memorial service will be held at 12:30 p.m., April 21, 2009, in Gorman-Scharpf Brentwood Chapel, 1947 E. Seminole, Springfield, MO 65804. The family asks that donations be sent to Community Hospices of America, 1465 E. Primrose Ave. Springfield, MO 65804, in heart felt thanks for the care and support given to Kay and her family during her illness.

Help For Haley - Fundraising Efforts to Aid CHS Student and Kiltie, Haley Stevens, Diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's Disease

Haley Stevens a student at Central has ALS, sometimes called Lou Gehrig's disease and is quite possibly the youngest person ever to be diagnosed with the disease. As you probably know, there is no known cure.

We do know that ALS rarely strikes one so young as Haley, who was a member of the CHS Dance Team and Kilties. Haley is an amazing young woman who continued to go to school even after she was confined to a wheelchair. She is a cherished member of the Central and SPS family and we want to be a great help and support to her and her family.

An account has been set up at Empire Bank called the Haley Stevens Fund. Donations to help the family can be made to the Haley Stevens Fund at Central High School or any local Empire Bank. Please call 227-0957 if you have questions.

This change is for many reasons. The main reason being that the Alumni site is time consuming when it comes to updating it and a blog is easier to update and post on.

Hello Everyone! The school year is coming to an end with only a couple of months left. As far as the Kilties go, there is only one more performance. That being of course the end of the year Memories Assembly. There may be a fundraiser next month, but it is still in the works and I will post about it as soon as I hear it's happening.

Tryout clinics were this week with tryouts happening tomorrow (Thursday). Returning and new Kilties will get their acceptance letters on Friday and I will post the 2009-2010 Kilties as soon as I get the list from the sponsors.

Majorette tryouts will be next Thursday, April 16th and Captain tryouts are the week of April 20th. The new Majorette and Captains will probably be announced Thursday April, 23rd.

It's a busy three weeks ahead for the returning girls as well as the girls who will be graduating this year. Good luck to everyone who will be trying out for next year's corps and for Majorette and Captains.

Sorry this post is over due, but it took a while to get back into the swing of things after Chicago. We left Springfield bright and early at 6am Fridaymoning and came back around 5pm Monday evening. The first thing we did when we got to Chicago was go to Navy Pier, which was pretty cool. It had a bunch of places to eat and some interesting stores, as well as a ferris wheel. After hanging out at Navy Pier we went back to our hotel, which was actually in Deerfield, IL and spent the rest of the evening preparing for the parade. On Saturday we got up early, got our uniforms on, ate breakfast at our hotel and then headed downtown for the parade. We got there pretty early so we could get there before they closed off the streets, but unfortunately we weren't able to see the greening of the river, but we did get to drive passed it later and it was still pretty green.

We had to wait outside in the staging area for probably about 3 or 4 hours before it was our turn to go in the parade, but we got to see a lot of the groups who were ahead of us as they got ready to go. When it was our turn to go, we finished the parade in about 10 minutes. In addition to being one of the shortest parades we've ever done, it was also one of the best we've ever looked and sounded. There wasn't time to call any trumpet or bagpipe songs because we were instructed to keep moving, so Vamps, Tenor New, Funky Cold Medina, and C-Step were used a lot.

After the parade we went back to our hotel to quickly change into street clothes before going to this food court type place that went over the highway. We ate dinner there and then went shopping at this gigantic outlet mall, which had a ton of cool stores and a bunch of really good sales. We were there for several hours, but we weren't able to see all of the shops there. After the mall we went back to the hotel and girls either went swimming or hung out in their rooms for the rest of the evening. On Sunday, we all went to the Field Museum and broke into small groups and looked around there all morning. Around lunch time we met back up as one group and part of us went to the Planetarium while the rest of us went shopping on the Magnificent Mile for the rest of the afternoon, at which time we met back up and went to the hotel.

Sunday night at the hotel we had a pizza party with Chicago style pizza, which is certainly different from what we're used to having here in Springfield. It's deep dish and kind of like a calzone with the toppings between two layers of dough and the sauce poured on top. It was good, but one piece was more than enough to fill you up. After the pizza party everyone packed up and enjoyed our last night in Chicago and in the morning we ate breakfast and got back on the bus to come home.

The History of the Kilties

In the "roaring twenties" the city of Springfield was lucky to count as one of its citizens, Dr. Robert Ritchie Robertson. "Public school music director," was not just a job to Dr. Robertson, it was an opportunity to enrich the lives of the students that passed through the Springfield public schools.

Dr. Robertson coined the phrase "Teach a boy to blow a horn, and he won't blow a safe." His first contribution to the community of Springfield was organizing, directing, and most importantly, securing community support of the largest Boy Scout Band in the world.

Not satisfied with his contribution, he worried that there were no constructive groups for the girls of high school age and he focused his attention to the task at hand. Drawing from his Scottish heritage, his answer of course was to form the first all girl drum and bugle corps in the United States. The end result of that dream of course still marches today as the Central High School Kilties in Springfield, Missouri. Dr. Robertson founded the Kilties in 1926.

Dr. Robertson then left for a trip back to Scotland, his homeland. While in Scotland, he acquired Scottish accouterments for the corps. It was then that the Royal Stewart plaid (see picture at right) was chosen. After returning to the states, Robertson chose Springfield Senior High School home economics teacher, Louise Giester, to make the kilts that the girls would be wearing. Harris later discovered that it was easier, not to mention cheaper to purchase the kilts from Canada.

In 1926, the corps made its first public appearance for the Rotary Convention in Springfield. The corps was lead by Majorette Esther Marshall. The immodest showing of the knees, the knee-length kilts along with the rest of the Scottish uniform shocked spectators, and some girls ended up having to drop out of the corps because of the uniforms. For the most part however, the public accepted the all-girls drum corps.

In 1927, the corps became known as the Scotch Lassies. Until 1928 or 1929, the Scotch Lassies marched with only drums. It was then that the Frisco officials donated new Aida trumpets to the corps. In 1930, Arch and Charles McGregor, along with the Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs donated four bagpipes to the corp. In 1939, Kilties became the formal name for the corps.

The high standards of personal conduct and musical performance have distinguished the Central High School Kilties as an outstanding parade unit. For over eighty years, the Kilties Drum and Bugle Corps have traveled all around the United States of America.

There are several well-remembered trips in the Kilties long history. In 1937, the Kilties marched in Kansas City for the St. Andrew Society of Scotsmen. At this time, they were known as Ritchie’s Scotch Lassies. In 1939, the corps marched at the Sedalia State Fair. In 1949, the corps performed in Boliver, Missouri in front of President Harry S. Truman and President Gallegos of Venezuela. In 1955, the televised coverage of the Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington D.C. showed the Kilties marching proudly to the drum cadences. In 1961, they were included to the list of participants in the Orange Bowl Parade.

In 1974, in recognition of their highest standard as a marching and performing drum corps of top-ranking national status, the Governor of Missouri proclaimed May 3rd "Central High School Kiltie Drum Corps Recognition Day." In 1989, the corps marched in President George Herbert Walker Bush’s inaugural parade in Washington D.C. In 1996, the Kilties performed in Magic Music days at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. In 2003, The Kilties, as well as the Hillcrest Highlanders, marched in London’s New Year’s Day Parade in front of England’s Queen Elizabeth II and the rest of the Royal Family.

Of course local parades throughout the Ozarks are just not a parade without the Kilties! From Park Day in August, until the many Christmas parades in December, the girls are busy doing one or two parades a week!

Since 1926, the Kilties have incorporated traditional Scottish dance and songs into their uniforms, instruments, parade march, and dance routines. "The Highland Fling" (see picture at left) which is said to have been danced frequently upon battlefields in celebration of victory after a successful encounter is performed at Homecoming assemblies.

The "Sword Dance" also seen at the Homecoming Assembly, was performed on the eve of battles as a means of exhibiting self-control and relieving tension. The Kilties Majorette performs the Sword Dance (see picture at right). Legend has is, that if she does not step on the swords, Central will be victorious in their battle!

Bagpipes originated a long time ago in southwestern Asia. Sheepherders liked to play on simple pipes and flutes to pass the time. But they could blow on only one pipe at a time. A sheepherder had an empty skin and it occurred to him to sew up the holes where legs and head had been so the skin would hold air. Then he attached several pipes. The sheepherder then attached small vibrating reeds inside the pipes, now he had something new, a bagpipe.

The idea spread far and wide through the Middle East and into Europe, the Roman Emperor Nero being the first piper on record. In the highlands of Scotland, the bagpipe found its true glory in Scotland where it became the instrument of a nation.

The Scottish bagpipes date back to the Highland wars of Scotland. Played during battle to distract and scare the enemy, the practice was so successful, that for a time the bagpipe was taken away from Scots by a very angry English King!

The bagpipe is a very difficult instrument to play and requires many hours of practice. The most recognizable bagpipe song the Kilties perform is "Scotland the Brave." The Shileighleigh, also a bagpipe song, is a mock battle, symbolic of the clan wars. The dancers advance and retreat, the same as if in battle. The sticks the girls carry represent weapons, and the color of the sticks represents two opposing clans. The Kilties perform this dance every year at Loyalty.

The Kiltie uniform is a replica of the old Scottish dress. The kilt, and tartan are purchased from mills in Scotland. The Kilties wear the Royal Stewart Tartan. This is the sacred plaid of Scotland, reserved for Kings and Queens. Leaders from Robert the Bruce to Queen Elizabeth wear the Royal Stewart.

The Scotsman, as a pouch use the sporran, which is made of horsehair, for money and valuables. Each girl (except the Captains) wears a Scottish hat called a Glengarry.

The clan hose tops, which are hand knitted socks accent white spats. A garter is worn on the top of each sock to designate the rank of the Kiltie. The color of the garter represents the rank: Drummers are red, bagpipers are blue, trumpets are yellow, auxiliary is green and the Majorette is white.

The Balmorals are a round Scottish hat and are worn by the captains and have feathers to represent the section color. The responsibility of the captains is to unify all the girls in their instrumental section by giving signals and having continual practices.

The Kilties have proudly represented Springfield and the Ozarks all over the United States for over eighty years. Dr. Ritchie Robertson and his original Springfield Senior High School all girl drum corps, started with a dream and created a piece of National history. Since the original Central High School Kilties, schools all over the United States have implemented all girl drum and bugle corps. The Kilties remain the first and oldest. Because of their tireless determination to be the best, they still receive invitations from all over the Ozarks and United States to perform. Please help keep the Kilties a proud Springfield tradition. Maintaining the corps is a monumental task that is funded solely through the fundraising efforts of the girls. The rising costs of uniforms, (fifteen hundred dollars a piece) instruments, (can cost up to fifteen hundred dollars for one bagpipe) repairs and bus transportation (two hundred dollars per local parade) makes this an impossible and never-ending task for today's girls.

Who does not thrill from the beat of the drums, or feel the Scottish Highland ghosts evoked from the haunting sounds of the Scottish Bagpipes? Parades are not complete without the excitement of the drum and bugle corps! To this very day, the Central High School Kilties remain an exciting popular highlight of parades and events.

Today’s Kilties are committed to preserving the memory of Dr. Ritchie Robertson and Kiltie Corps preceding them by continuing the tradition long into the future! The Central High School Kilties Drum and Bugle Corps have been around for a long time and have had performances all around the world for several audiences ranging from elementary schools to United States Presidents and European Royalty.

The purpose of the Kiltie Drum Corps is to stimulate school spirit and to promote a closer relationship with the public though service and performance, and to display high standards. Being a Kiltie is a year round job for which we practice throughout the summer months. We feel it is an honor to become a Kiltie.

As said before, the Kilties are recognized as the first and oldest uniformed girls drum corps in the United States, starting in 1926. This gives us something extra special to be proud of. Hopefully the Kilties Drum and Bugle Corps will continue to march for another eighty-three years and longer. If for some reason they do not, the Kilties have a saying that is a tradition. A tradition that will go on forever - Once a Kiltie, Always a Kiltie.
